CAO Flathead Sparkplug 450
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
The CAO Flathead Sparplug is a great maduro which extends the CAO Flathead line. Introduced in 2013, the CAO Flathead line is a series of Connecticut Broadleaf box-press cigars with a theme of "Cigars, Cars and Girls." The Sparkplug is as close to a true square pressed cigar as I have ever seen. The packaging is definitely in line with CAO marketing. Each cigar comes in a bright green "sparkplug" box and inside the box is a beautiful cigar with a rich dark expresso colored oily wrapper with few visible veins and one of the flatter caps of any cigar I've come across. Tightly packed but great burn. First draw was fantastic, full of smoke, great flavor and nice bold aroma. For a small stick the burn time was nearly 90 minutes. First pull introduces bold black pepper that then yields way to a nice blend of earth, cocoa and hints of brown sugar. The mix is not extremely complex but is a very solid flavorful mix.
The first third of this cigar was outstanding. A nice initial burst of peppers and then a very well blended expresso undertone takes over. Great draw and aroma and a very surprising amount of smoke with the very first pull that maintained throughout the smoke experience.
The second third is where I noticed the mocha began to be more prominient and the pepper, which stayed throught the stick, began to take a more subtle hint behind the mocha.
In the final third there was a more nutty flavor mixed with the mocha and the pepper bagan to increase in flavor as well. This was an excellent smoke that is definitely "nub worthy".
Overall this is a great maduro which lasted surprisingly longer than I anticipated. Great flavor and strength throughtout the entire smoking experience. The Sparkplug is very tight and full but is constructed extremely well. This is one I would highly recommend and at this price point I think the CAO line has another winner.
